today I took a ride to the nearby bogs, and found these beauties.
I will go back again to see them in flower




the unspotted one looks suspiciously like Anacamtis laxiflora however I checked and it is apparently not reported in the Netherlands, so they must be 2 different Dactylorhiza taxa.

I was also happy to see Osmunda regalis for the first time in situ!!!

These are the spotted and unspotted forms of Dactylorhiza praetermissa. Rare everywhere exept in the Netherlands, Belgium and Uk.

Within a few weeks you can see thousands of them!

you see, it is for me a new experience. In Greece you have to go to high and quite isolated mountain areas to see Dactylorhiza. You can see Ophrys in the middle of Athens, however Dactylorhiza are rare.

You know the problem with Greece is that the estate is lovely. But it finishes there. I cannot relate culturally anymore with my fellow citizens.

Since you have already commented on several topics written on this Dutch forum I presume you are able to understand written Dutch, right? I also got the impression you are more than an (amateur) orchid enthousiast. Would you like to comment on that (only if you like to)?

My dutch are almost non excistant. However, google's dutch are quite good!!! and so it translates.

Lately I am taxonomic advisor to the Greek Orchid Society where I manage the taxonomic and cultural databases (involving one with the cultivated plants, and one with natives).
I am what you would consider a lumber, however the reality is that since I have seen million of Ophrys in their natural environment, as well as growing a few from seed and seeing other plants grown from seed, I make a clear distinction between Delforgian micro-species (and the movement of species-mongering he begun, which advocates that Europe has the orchid diversity flora of Equador), and real species.

We just came back from Samos, there was a orchid conference. Very interesting. Unfortunately we had to go home. We had both a flu and a lot of cough. Because after Samos we had planned to go to Kythira and the Peloponessos. The book you mention we have that, some pictures are not right, that's a pitty. Now there is a brand new book of my dear friend Alibertis. It's looking oke but expensive euro 100.

yes, I agree, many pictures are not right! and many names too! it is a product of its time.

but to my defence, we are living in a post-Linnean era (where there is too much confusion on names and what they mean).
For example, there is
''Ophrys oestrifera M. Bieb.'' (= O. apifera, WCSF)
This is given in Delforge (2006) as
''O. oestrifera Steven''
there is no publication of Steven with that name, Steven refers to ''O. oestrifera M. Bieb.''
It's type is in Berlin

and shows O. apifera (note the long ~ style, it shows well in the type too and the very small petals)
Stlill people use the name ''O. oestrifera'' for Ο. scolopax members.
The same goes for many names (ie where is Serapias orientalis validly published?)
